When someone mentions Titan, most people think of Tanishq or watches.
But few know that Titan also builds advanced engineering solutions for aerospace, defense, industrial automation, and semiconductor equipment through its wholly owned subsidiary, Titan Engineering & Automation Limited (TEAL).
What’s even more interesting is how this business was born.
It started in the 1990s, when Titan needed to automate its own watch manufacturing as demand for quartz watches surged. What began as an in-house engineering team gradually developed world-class automation capabilities.
Titan soon realised these capabilities could solve manufacturing challenges beyond watches.
The company entered in automating automotive sector in 2003, designing assembly and testing lines, and expanded into aerospace in 2005, investing over US$20 million in advanced manufacturing facilities at Hosur. In 2017, this engineering division was spun off as TEAL.
Today, TEAL operates through two businesses.
The first is Automation Solutions, where it designs turnkey assembly and testing lines for manufacturers. It has delivered 750+ automation lines to over 100 customers across industries such as automobiles, electronics, healthcare, and consumer goods.
The second is Manufacturing Services, where TEAL produces ultra-high-precision components for aerospace, defense, and semiconductor equipment companies. These industries demand micron-level precision, creating high entry barriers and long-term customer relationships. The scale is larger than most investors realise.
TEAL employs more than 1,500 engineers, exports to 20+ countries, and almost every car manufactured in India has at least one component assembled on a machine built by TEAL.
Its customer list includes SAFRAN, Thales, UTC Aerospace Systems, HAL, and Liebherr. Even more impressively, TEAL is the only Asian company to be consecutively recognised as a Platinum Supplier by one of the world’s largest aerospace and defence manufacturers—a recognition earned among 40,000+ global suppliers.

Our takeaway:
Titan isn’t just a consumer brand anymore. Beneath its jewellery and watch business lies a high-precision engineering company quietly building capabilities in industries that are becoming increasingly important for global manufacturing. Sometimes, the most interesting business inside a company is the one most investors don’t even know exists.
